THE CACTUS CUP

Arizona State needs to turn things around and win some respect with a big win. But Arizona has been the surprise of the pac ten. With wins over  Oregon State and UCLA and the damage they did to Oregon in knocking the Oregon quarterback out for the rest of the season...

Arizona State by 10.

A small boy was frantic when he arrived at school. "Teacher my homework ate my dog!  My homework ate my dog!"

Teacher: "Are you trying to tell me that your dog ate your homework?"

Small boy: "No my homework is right here! My dog has not been seen since last night!"

I dared myself one late summer, to visit Arizona in the heat of summer. I walked into a store on the shore of Lake Havasu one day and asked if the 114 degree heat was 'a pretty hot day here?' 'Not really,' replied the clerk, 'we've had a lot hotter days!'

Much is written about the 'toughness' of early pioneers. But who could be tougher than those that lived in Arizona in summers before air conditioning. I think even the famed gunfight at OK corral might have been tempers flaring from too much heat! (Ok so the gunfight took place on October 26th but it may have been a long summer before that that got everyone stirred up!)

Enjoy Arizona all year round and especially in the summer! It is a great place to explore!

 LAKE HAVASU CITY

Try a virtual tour. Let this site load and have a look around!  Havasuchamber.com/vtour

If you want to see 'the London Bridge' cancel your flight to England. The London bridge has not been there in many years. You can find it at Lake Havasu City. The project itself is quite remarkable. In school we were taught that the reassembly of the bridge was one of the 'great jig saw puzzles of all time'. Contrary to what you may have heard, London bridge is  NOT falling down!

Go for Spring Break if that is the time you want to be there, otherwise you might time your trip for any other part of the year. There are some smaller places around the lake that do offer privacy and quiet. You just have to find them.

The aquatics center offers a cool place for young and old. You can see it on the tour above.

GRAND CANYON

Please don't plan a trip to Grand Canyon unless you know where you are going to spend the night. I have driven hundreds of miles after my visit looking for a motel of any kind. When you go to the canyon make sure you also plan for your night. I have tried to include some good resources to help your planning. Your family with thank me!

KINGMAN

Kingman may be one of the underrated cities of Arizona. On the merge of Highway 40 and 93, most visitors have another destination in mind. But Kingman does have some real charm and may not be a bad place to rest for the night. Visit the railroad museum at least and relax awhile.

YUMA

I like Yuma Arizona! It is hot, it is dry and it is southwest Arizona at its best! In the heat of the summer your favorite beverage is going to taste ten times better in Yuma! But a lot of people also descend on Yuma in the winter. 'What? One hundred and ten degrees at 10:00 at night? Good thing it's cooled off some!'

BACK ROADS AZ

If you like adventure, try a trip down highway 191. Not much is written about the eastern part of Arizona but there are some interesting things to see here. You might run across the largest copper mine in the United States on your way through some mountain scenery. And with any luck you will end up in my favorite Arizona town: Safford! Safford has enough small town charm to make you feel at home.

PLAY BALL!

If you have the time in the Spring, take in National League Spring training! You can enjoy Phoenix and several major league teams at the same time. Strictly for baseball lovers of all ages. Bring your glove, you may get called up by your team... or at least you can dream about that from the bleachers!
